The Porsche 968 is a sports car produced by the German automobile manufacturer Porsche AG from 1991 to 1995.
It was the final evolution of a series of front-engine, rear-wheel-drive water-cooled models that began
nearly 20 years earlier with the 924. The initial [citation needed] position in the company's line was taken over from the 944, with
with which he shared about 20 % parts. The 968 was Porsche's last new front-engined vehicle before its introduction
Cayenne SUV in 2003. Porsche's 944 debuted for the 1982 model year as an evolution of the
924, it was updated as “944S” in 1987 and “944S2” in 1989. Porsche was in a big financial crisis at the time,
and buyers were less interested in his sports cars, especially in the US. Almost unchanged design
the 944, derived from the 924, was showing its age and sales of the model declined. That's why Porsche figured it out
the need to develop a new basic model. Shortly after the start of production of the S2 version, Porsche engineers
began developing a second set of significant upgrades for the model as executives planned the final “S3” version of the 944
with a design language that conforms to
models in its line to save development costs. During the development phase, engineers either significantly changed or
completely replaced the 80 % mechanical components of the 944, leaving the outgoing S2
so little that Porsche management decided to introduce this version as a new model
and calls it the 968. In addition to numerous mechanical upgrades, the new model has also received significant improvements
restyled both inside and out, with a more modern, streamlined look and more standard
luxury accessories like the 944. In order to save production costs, production was moved out of the factory
Audi in Neckarsulm where the 924 and 944 were built under contract with Porsche at Porsche's own factory in
Zuffenhausen.
